Two sides of the same coin: Advancing joint action on climate and food security

About the event

Climate change is a major cause of the current hunger crisis, which has been further exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic and Russia’s war against Ukraine, leading to spikes in food and energy prices. Since 2019, the number of people confronted with acute food insecurity has risen from 135 million to 345 million. The World Food Programme predicts that if the average global temperature increases by 2°C from pre-industrial levels, an additional 189 million people will be facing hunger. Through higher temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, and greater frequency of extreme weather events, climate change is increasingly affecting all four pillars of food security: affordability, availability, quality, and sustainability. Adequate financing for food sensitive, anticipatory climate action is the precondition for effectively addressing food emergencies as well as long-term food insecurity.

Building on the discussions at the MSC 2022 Townhall and the Roundtable at the Munich Leaders Meeting in Washington, this panel discussion at the margins of COP27 focuses on the ripple-effects of climate change on global food security. By fostering the exchange between stakeholders, it aims to strengthen complementary approaches and align efforts addressing both climate change and food insecurity.
