About the event
We are in the midst of the biggest food security crisis in a decade. Climate change, COVID-19 and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continue to drive prices on energy, food and fertilizers to record high levels. Fertilizers have become less affordable and accessible to smallholder farmers in low-income countries, threatening to further jeopardize food production and security in the coming years. At the same time, mineral fertilizer production and its inefficient use is a major driver of climate change.
Germany is holding the G7 presidency in 2022, and together with the World Bank launched the Global Alliance for Food Security (GAFS) to catalyze an agile and coordinated response to the unfolding crisis. Improved nutrient management and fertilizer efficiency, and promotion of locally available alternatives to mineral fertilizer, can contribute to climate change mitigation while strengthening the resilience of agroecosystems.
The BMZ is therefore hosting a side event that brings together leaders from governments, industry, research and civil society. Speakers discuss priority actions and commitments needed to respond to the short-term needs of poor farmers and consumers in the Global South, while not losing sight of the objective to support the transformation towards climate-friendly and resilient agrifood systems.
